About this specimen
Salmon-pink rhombs, few of them more than three or four millimetres across, are strewn over a dark grey matrix dusted here and there with a thin white crust. The scatter is what makes the piece read: warm pink against near-black, with the individual crystals sharp enough to show their tilted rhombohedral faces under a loupe.
Rhodochrosite is manganese carbonate, MnCO3, trigonal, and its colour tracks the manganese content — the soft salmon tone here is characteristic of Chinese occurrences rather than the deep raspberry of some other sources. It is a demanding mineral to keep: Mohs 3.5 to 4, perfect cleavage in three directions, and no tolerance whatever for acids or ultrasonic cleaners. Dry storage, and support it from underneath.
