About this specimen

Ink-dark violet runs in bands through an otherwise pale, translucent crystal. This Yaogangxian fluorite is essentially one large individual, its faces papered over with fine parallel steps where later growth crept across older surfaces, and the banding reads as boxes within boxes — an earlier, smaller crystal preserved inside the present one. Two small colourless quartz points sit at the lower edges, with a crumb of dark matrix anchoring the base.

Zoning like this forms when a crystal pauses long enough for the fluid around it to change — a pulse of colouring trace elements, a film of foreign mineral — and then carries on growing over the record. Yaogangxian in Hunan is the classic Chinese source for purple-blue fluorite of this character. At Mohs 4 with perfect octahedral cleavage it wants a padded shelf rather than a pocket.

Compact at 6.6 × 5.1 × 3.8 cm and 45 g. The images throughout are of this one crystal, photographed from several angles.
