About this specimen
Violet cubes crowd this Hunan plate shoulder to shoulder, stacked cube on cube so that the surface reads as a series of small terraces rather than a flat crust. Nearly every crystal is banded — a pale, almost white frosted rim closing on a grape-dark core — and a strip of bare grey-tan matrix runs down one side to give the field an edge.
Zoning like that is a record of changing water. Fluorite takes up whatever trace elements and lattice defects the fluid carried at the moment each layer grew, so a banded cube is a stack of separate chapters rather than one event. Fluorite is Mohs 4 with perfect octahedral cleavage; lift a plate like this by the matrix, never by a projecting crystal.
