About this specimen

Every cube on this cluster carries a violet ghost of an earlier, smaller cube inside it. The outer fluorite is water-clear and lightly stepped at the corners; the phantom hangs at the centre as a soft purple square with blurred edges, and a dozen crystals across the plate each hold their own inner shadow. The whole group rests on a crust of olive-khaki druse that fills every gap between the cubes.

A phantom marks a pause. The fluorite grew purple, growth halted long enough for a film of impurity to settle on the crystal faces, then clear fluorite resumed on the same lattice and sealed the old surface inside. Yaogangxian, the tungsten mine in southern Hunan, is the classic Chinese source for this clear-over-purple habit, and few minerals record their own growth so plainly.

The cluster measures 5.8 × 2.3 × 5.3 cm and weighs 152 g. The clear acrylic display block shown is included, and the images are of this cluster alone.
