About this specimen
Shangbao, Hunan, pyrite at 5.2 cm; a small cabinet piece. A pale metallic pyrite crystal sits at the top of a grey crystalline matrix, its flat face catching the light against the duller rock around it.
Pyrite is the most collected metallic mineral, and the best pieces combine sharp form with a lustre that has not dulled; store it dry to keep it that way.
Hunan is the heartland of Chinese mineral collecting, home to Yaogangxian, Xianghualing and Shangbao, and its fluorite, calcite and sulfides are the benchmark for the country.
