About this specimen
Fujian, pyrite with quartz at 5.7 cm; a small cabinet piece. Rounded white quartz mounds rise from the plate, each one capped with a thin crust of golden pyrite so the tops read metallic against the pale crystal beneath.
Pyrite grows as cubes, pyritohedra and octahedra with a brassy metallic lustre; Chinese pyrite is known for sharp, mirror-faced crystals.
Good quartz is about hexagonal prisms with clean terminations and the glassy lustre that lets a cluster catch light from every angle.
Fujian's fluorite-quartz veins have supplied collectors for two decades; the province is the source of most of the green and purple Chinese fluorite on the market.
