About this specimen
Half the pyrite faces on this Peruvian cluster have darkened to gunmetal while the rest still burn brass-bright, and that split is what carries the piece across a room. The crystals are pyritohedra — five-sided faces meeting at shallow angles, the largest near 1.5 cm across — wedged so tightly that quartz has only narrow seams to work in.
Pyrite is iron disulphide, FeS2, and Peru’s polymetallic veins are the classic source for crystals cut this sharply; the pyritohedron is a scarcer habit than the everyday pyrite cube. Mohs 6 to 6.5 sounds durable, but pyrite is brittle and corners chip when knocked. The dark bloom on the upper faces is a thin surface tarnish, and it spreads if the specimen is kept damp — dry shelf, no ultrasonic bath.
The cluster measures 6.0 × 5.0 × 4.0 cm and weighs 200 g, a comfortable one-hand piece, shown between fingers in the photographs for scale. No base is included. Every frame above was shot of this one cluster.
