About this specimen

Milk-white quartz points crowd the upper half of this small plate, each one frosted by a sugary second generation of micro-crystals that rounds the edges and turns the whole cluster matte rather than glassy. Below them the rock darkens abruptly to charcoal and near-black, giving the pale terminations a hard graphic backing.

Quartz records its history in coatings like this. A first generation grows as clean prisms; later, cooler fluid then drops a fine druse over everything already standing, blurring the sharp faces without destroying the underlying shapes. Inner Mongolia yields plenty of such two-stage quartz on dark, sulfide-bearing rock. At Mohs 7 the mineral itself needs no special care — the only vulnerable part is that fragile druse skin, which dulls if it is scrubbed.

The specimen is 6.5 × 6.0 × 4.0 cm and weighs 100 g, photographed in the hand for scale and sold without a stand. The plate photographed and the plate shipped are one and the same.
