About this specimen
A frosted quartz column stands upright like a small pillar, and at its very top a fluorite crystal sits as a capstone — deep violet through the core, fading to clear glass at the rim, its faces stepped and lightly etched. A translucent calcite blade juts from the left shoulder, and flecks of pale gold cling along the column’s side.
Yaogangxian is known for stacking species on one another, and three of them in clean vertical order on a piece this small is uncommon. The fluorite (CaF2) is Mohs 4 and cleaves perfectly on the octahedron, so a knock to the crown is the one thing to avoid; the quartz carrying it is Mohs 7. Note that the violet is zoned rather than uniform, concentrated in the core and thinning outward as the pocket chemistry changed.
The piece stands 5.5 cm tall on a footprint of 1.5 × 1.2 cm and weighs 27 g, fixed upright on the clear acrylic base pictured. What you see here is the piece that will arrive.
