About this specimen
Thousands of slender stilbite blades radiate from a single point and pack into a peach-cream ball that fills a hollow in the grey basalt beneath it. The needle tips are frosted and matte; lower down, where the blades widen, the crystals turn glassy and faintly translucent. A patch of whiter, finer growth sits near the crown, and two waxy pale-lemon nodules cling to the vesicular rock below.
Indian basalt flows are riddled with old gas cavities, and it is inside those bubbles that zeolites such as stilbite crystallise out of circulating fluids. A ball like this one forms when growth begins at a single nucleus on the cavity wall and spreads into every direction left open to it. Stilbite is soft and brittle at Mohs 3.5–4 — keep it dry, blow the dust off rather than brushing it, and the blade tips stay sharp.
