About this specimen

Two cubes, two colours. The left crystal is a cool ice-blue with a faint green heart; the right is pale lilac, warming almost to pink where light comes through the back of it. Neither face is flat — both climb in shallow terraces, so the silhouette against the grey backdrop is a staircase of square corners. Hair-fine dark needles thread the interiors at every angle, and a bright white sugary crust fills the notch where the two crystals meet.

Put a loupe on those inclusions: each filament was caught and sealed as the fluorite grew, which is why they sit at every angle through the crystal rather than along one plane. The colour banding is a second record, written in chemistry: the pale blue and the lilac are separate pulses of fluid, frozen in place. Fluorite is CaF2, Mohs 4, cleaving perfectly in four directions — grip the piece across a face, not at an edge.

It measures 5.6 × 4.3 × 3.6 cm and weighs 95 g, presented on the clear acrylic block seen in the photographs. What the camera saw is what leaves the shelf.
