About this specimen

A rust-brown shadow hangs deep inside this single blocky calcite crystal, glassy on every face and pale rose where light passes through it: a phantom of fine hematite dust marking where growth paused, the crystal gathered iron, and clear calcite later sealed it over. Heavier red-brown staining runs along the base, where the crystal meets a wedge of white matrix.

Included hematite, Fe2O3, is what gives Hunan calcite this blush. The pigment sits in planes rather than throughout the crystal, so the piece reads pink from one angle and nearly colourless from another as you turn it. Calcite is CaCO3, hardness 3, with perfect rhombohedral cleavage — which means a dropped crystal splits along flat planes instead of merely chipping. Keep it clear of vinegar, household cleaners and anything else acidic.

The crystal measures 4.1 × 3.0 × 2.5 cm and weighs 30 g, perched on the clear acrylic block seen in the images. No substitutions are made: these frames show the very crystal on offer.
