This is a rare and highly aesthetic green fluorite specimen from Fujian, China. The fluorite forms distinctive spherical aggregates, sometimes referred to as “fluorite balls,” which rest atop a bed of sparkling quartz crystals. The combination of light green hues with subtle purple zoning and sharp cubic terminations makes this piece especially desirable to collectors of Chinese locality minerals.

About this specimen

Rather than single cubes, the fluorite here has grown into rounded mounds — each dome assembled from dozens of small cubic crystals stacked corner on corner until the outline turns spherical. Colour shifts across the plate from water-clear through pale mint to distinct violet cores glowing up through the outer layers, and a thin frosting of minute colourless crystals dusts the whole upper surface.

The mounds sit on a bed of small colourless quartz points, with a dark grey pocket opening between them at the lower right. Fujian is known for this ball-like fluorite; it forms where growth runs fast enough that fresh cubes nucleate on the faces of older ones quicker than any single crystal can enlarge, so the aggregate rounds off instead of squaring up. Nothing here was shaped by hand.

195 g and 6.4 × 5.3 × 4.8 cm, a hand-sized plate cupped in the fingers in the photographs for scale. The fluorite you see photographed is the fluorite that will be packed.
