This specimen from Hunan, China is a dense mass of black iron ore carrying bright calcite inclusions — the dark, near-matte ore against the pale carbonate is what gives the piece its contrast.
The ore is an iron oxide (Fe2O3), showing the metallic to submetallic lustre typical of primary iron oxide formation. The calcite (CaCO3) crystallises in the trigonal system at a Mohs hardness of 3, with rhombohedral cleavage and the strong double refraction the species is known for; it formed in the ore’s voids and fractures as a later carbonate phase.
The interest here is the pairing: a heavy, opaque, industrial-looking ore hosting a bright, well-formed carbonate. It reads as both a geological teaching piece and a display specimen.
