About this specimen
A soft olive cloud of included material sits sealed inside the dominant calcite crystal, like weather trapped in a paperweight; the blocky crystal is glass-clear along its edges and faintly straw through the body. A second, smaller crystal grows behind it at a tilt, its prism faces finely striated. Both sit on a cream druse of small bright crystals that spreads out across the matrix.
The habit is worth naming correctly. Calcite is trigonal, and what looks at a glance like a cube here is a steep rhombohedron, its faces meeting at angles just off ninety degrees — that near-miss is the giveaway for anyone learning to separate calcite from fluorite by eye. At Mohs 3 with three perfect cleavages, calcite chips easily if it is allowed to roll against neighbours, so give it a lined box or a padded shelf.
Daye, in Huangshi, Hubei, is the source. The piece measures 5.1 × 4.3 × 3.6 cm, weighs 65 g and comes exactly as shown, without a base. The photographs on this listing were made from this crystal group and no other.
