About this specimen
Two different fluorites share one plate here. Across the middle sit chunky grey-violet crystals with a matte, almost dusty surface and stepped octahedral faces, the largest around 3 cm. Above and to the right a second group is glassy and pale sea-green, translucent enough to show lilac cores through its outer layer. Between them the matrix is a cream-yellow druse of popcorn texture, a few solitary violet crystals sitting out on it alone.
Colour changes of this kind record a change in the fluid: the same CaF2 lattice takes violet or green depending on the trace elements and lattice defects present as each layer grew, and Guizhou plates often keep both stages side by side. The crystals are not simple cubes either — the faces are modified toward the octahedron, hence their blunt, terraced outline. Fluorite is Mohs 4 and cleaves on those octahedral planes.
