About this specimen
One deep indigo cube dominates this small Yaogangxian piece — a squared block of fluorite a good centimetre and a half across, its front face stepped in shallow terraces and interrupted by a white patch of quartz that grew over it. A second, paler lavender cube sits half-buried to its left. The rest is a bed of small glassy quartz crystals with dark green chlorite banked in the hollows between them.
Fluorite’s colour has little to do with impurity in the ordinary sense: it comes from defects in the CaF2 lattice, sites where an electron sits where a fluorine ion should be, absorbing light and leaving blue-violet behind. Concentrate those defects and you get the ink-dark corners seen here; thin them and you get the pale lavender of the smaller crystal. At Mohs 4, with perfect cleavage in four directions, fluorite is best lifted by the matrix rather than the cube.
