About this specimen
This little calcite grew itself into a ball. The entire surface is built from overlapping blades laid down in curved, petal-like sheets that wrap around the body of the specimen; the effect is closer to a tight cabbage than to a cut and polished ball. Colour is a quiet oatmeal grey-tan, with a pearly flash wherever a broad cleavage face catches the light.
Radiating bladed calcite of this type nucleates at a point and grows outward in every direction at once, and where nothing obstructs it the result is a sphere assembled entirely out of crystal. Baotou in Inner Mongolia is the source of this one, and the habit remains an uncommon way to find the commonest of carbonates. Mohs 3 and three perfect cleavages mean the blade tips chip readily — hold it by the body, never the edges.
2.5 × 2.5 × 2.3 cm and 25 g, resting on putty over a clear acrylic block for photography. Nothing in these frames is a stand-in: this is the calcite you receive.
