About this specimen

Someone appears to have drawn a circuit board onto the face of this cube. The dominant crystal is deep amber-gold, gemmy, near transparent in its upper third, and across its front face runs a network of fine right-angled lines — squares inside squares, staircases turning back on themselves, laid out as though with a ruler. Three smaller golden cubes cluster behind it on pinkish-cream matrix flecked with dark green.

Those staircases are growth steps — layers that stalled part-way across the face, leaving their edges as terraces a fraction of a millimetre high. They return light at a different angle from the face around them, so the pattern flares into view and vanishes as the crystal turns. Beijing is an unusual locality label on a fluorite. The species is Mohs 4 with perfect octahedral cleavage, so lift it by the matrix, not the cube.

The specimen is 5.1 × 3.8 × 3.8 cm and 75 g. It arrives on the clear acrylic block shown, patterned face turned to the front — and the crystal in these frames is the one that will be packed.
