About this specimen

DR Congo cobaltoan calcite at 5.6 cm and 115 g; a small cabinet piece with intense colour. A block of dark matrix coated in vivid hot-pink cobaltoan calcite, the crust sparkling with fine crystals and the pink saturated across the whole face.

Cobaltoan calcite carries cobalt in the lattice, which turns ordinary calcite a hot pink to magenta; the Congo material is the world standard.

The Katanga Copperbelt of DR Congo is the world's premier source of malachite, dioptase, chrysocolla and cobaltoan calcite.

Dimensions place it in the small cabinet range, 5.6 × 3.6 × 4 cm (2.20 × 1.42 × 1.57 in) and 115 g (4.1 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.
