About this specimen
Shanxi, red hematoid quartz with specular hematite at 2.7 cm; a miniature, supplied in the display box shown. A quartz crystal in dusty red with one bright glassy face at the top and the rest of the surface left rough and granular, scattered with black specular hematite flecks.
Hematoid quartz is coloured by hematite inclusions, giving it a warm red-to-orange body colour that intensifies in strong light.
Specular hematite (specularite) is iron oxide in mirror-bright platy crystals; it gives a piece a metallic sparkle that photographs poorly and looks far better in hand.
Shanxi produces calcite, fluorite and quartz from its lead-zinc and fluorite districts.
Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 2.7 × 2 × 2 cm (1.06 × 0.79 × 0.79 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
