About this specimen
Thick, coarse rutile needles fill this large quartz sphere from top to bottom. They are dense and orderly, many running in parallel like a sheaf of straws, others crossing at angles, and they come in a mix of colours: reddish brown, gold and a pale silvery green.
Mica grows alongside the rutile, showing as dark and golden flakes clustered in a few places, most clearly on one face. Between the needles the quartz is clear and transparent, so you can follow single needles deep into the sphere. It is polished, and its 9.3 cm size makes the needles feel almost architectural.
