About this specimen
Hubei native copper at 3.7 cm; a miniature. Copper mineral: avoid dust and wash hands after handling. Native copper grown as an open, spongy mass, the metal branching and knotting back on itself with a warm orange-brown surface where it has weathered.
Native copper grows as dendritic, wire or crystallised masses with a metallic red-brown colour; freshly cleaned surfaces show the true copper tone.
Hubei's Daye copper-iron mines are famous for calcite, and the province also produces fluorite and quartz from its mountain districts.
By size it is miniature, 3.7 × 3.6 × 2 cm (1.46 × 1.42 × 0.79 in). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
