About this specimen
A cave straw grown thick and then dressed: the core of this Yunnan piece is a stalactitic calcite column, and every surface of it is sheathed in short amber-orange crystals that taper to points. Between the larger ones sit rusty micro-sprays of the same mineral, fine as lichen, and the foot of the cone breaks into pale yellow-green calcite where the warm iron staining runs out.
Stalactitic calcite begins as carbonate-charged water dripping in a cave void, building a hollow tube layer by layer; only later does a second generation of crystals grow outward over that tube, which is what gives the piece its bristling, cone-shaped profile. Calcite is CaCO3, Mohs 3 with perfect rhombohedral cleavage, and it dissolves in even weak acid — dry dusting only, and never vinegar.
It stands 5.2 cm tall on a 4.1 × 2.9 cm footprint and weighs 126 g, shown upright on a clear acrylic display base with white putty. What the camera recorded is what will arrive.
