About this specimen

Cubes stacked on cubes, each offset a little from the one below, climb this specimen like a staircase built by something very patient. The colour shifts from frosted periwinkle at the upper steps to dense indigo cores further down, and where the crystals are clearest, squared violet phantoms float inside them — earlier cubes that never lost their corners.

Fluorite (CaF2) grows in the isometric system, so a cube that starts in one orientation keeps it. Stepped columns like this appear when fresh cubes nucleate on the faces of older ones in parallel alignment, producing the branching, tree-like habit Yaogangxian is known for. The violet is a colour-centre effect — a lattice defect rather than an added pigment — which is why the tone can jump abruptly from one growth layer to the next.

Slender at 5.8 × 2.3 × 2.0 cm and 35 g, it is putty-mounted upright on a clear acrylic cube for these photographs. The specimen pictured is the specimen you receive.
