About this specimen
Sea-glass green — pale, cool, a long way from emerald — fills the fluorite on this Xianghualing plate. The crystals gather in two loose groups, one upper and one lower, their faces stepped and softly etched rather than mirror-bright, and slim colourless quartz prisms stand among them like a picket line. The whole is bedded in a tan drusy quartz crust that wraps over the plate edges.
Xianghualing in southern Hunan is tin country, and its fluorite comes up in these quiet greens rather than the saturated purples the province is better known for. Green in fluorite (CaF2) has nothing to do with copper; it comes from colour centres and trace rare-earth substitution locked into the cubic lattice while the crystal grew. Mohs 4, with perfect octahedral cleavage — steady thumb pressure on an exposed corner can start a cleavage flake, so lift the piece by its matrix.
Flat-backed and built to display face-up, the plate is 5.8 × 5.1 × 2.3 cm and weighs 55 g. Every photograph here was taken of this plate itself.
