What looks like grey silk pulled taut across this Inner Mongolian plate is boulangerite: thousands of hair-fine metallic needles, the longest well over a centimetre, laid down in crossing mats. Small colourless quartz points push up through the fibres, a few of them tinted the faintest lilac, and brassy pyrite specks glint along the lower edge and around the rim.
Boulangerite (Pb5Sb4S11) is a lead-antimony sulfosalt that almost never builds a blocky crystal; it grows as these felted acicular sprays instead. At Mohs 2.5 to 3 the fibres crush under a careless thumb and will not spring back, so blow dust off rather than brushing, and never let packing material press down on the mats.
