About this specimen

The vanadinite here reads almost black until light finds it, and then the crystal edges glow a deep brownish red, the colour of dark cherry glass. Dozens of short hexagonal prisms stud the dark matrix, each capped by a flat basal face, most of them sharp-edged and squat rather than needle-like. The larger individuals reach a few millimetres across and sit in loose ranks instead of a single crowded carpet.

Vanadinite is a lead chlorovanadate, Pb5(VO4)3Cl, hexagonal, formed in the oxidised zone above lead deposits where vanadium-bearing solutions work on weathering galena. The stubby prism-plus-flat-cap habit is characteristic of the Mibladen district. Its lustre is resinous to adamantine rather than metallic, it scratches easily at Mohs 3, and being a lead mineral it is worth washing your hands afterwards.

3.6 × 2.0 × 3.0 cm and 34 g, mounted on the pale acrylic block seen in the photographs. Thumbnail scale, better under a desk lamp than across a room. The piece pictured is the piece dispatched.
