About this specimen
Grape-purple fluorite runs the length of this Guizhou plate in one low ridge, and almost every crystal in it is sugared over with micro-crystals until the surfaces read as velvet rather than glass. Only at the right does one crystal escape the frosting, showing a broad mirror-flat face and a translucent violet interior. Beneath the ridge the matrix is pale cream, porous, and speckled through with grey grains.
Velvet surfaces are fragile in a way glassy ones are not. The raised micro-crystals snag on cloth, and a stiff brush shears them off and leaves dull bald patches behind. Fluorite is soft to begin with — 4 on the Mohs scale, perfect cleavage in four directions — so blow the dust off rather than wiping, keep the plate out of hard sunlight, and the contrast between the frosted ridge and that single clear window at the right stays exactly as photographed.
