About this specimen

The whole block is upholstered in pistachio-green dolomite, a granular crust with the texture of popcorn, run into every hollow, and two things push up through it: water-clear quartz points and glassy fluorite cubes the colour of pale lilac smoke. The largest cube, low and right of centre, has grown in shallow squares set one inside the next and stands proud of the green on its own small plinth.

Yaogangxian is a tungsten mine in southern Hunan, and much of what comes out of its pockets follows this order: fluorite and quartz first, then a late carbonate wash that powders everything in dolomite. Here the carbonate arrived in the yellow-green shade collectors call pistachio, stopping just short of burying the fluorite. Fluorite is CaF2 at Mohs 4 with perfect octahedral cleavage; the dolomite crust is softer again, and a stiff brush will strip it, so clean with nothing more forceful than air.

A chunky 9.9 × 7.4 × 8.6 cm and 365 g, shown resting in the hand for scale with no base attached. All images are of this individual piece.
