About this specimen

Lavender rather than purple, and pale enough that the milk-white growth zones inside show through, this Yaogangxian group is built from cubes stacked in shallow terraces — each face a flight of steps barely a millimetre high. Brassy pyrite specks are sprinkled across the fluorite like grit thrown at wet paint, catching the light in small hard points, and a scrap of olive matrix clings to the upper left shoulder.

Stepped growth of this sort happens when a crystal is fed faster at its edges than at the centre of a face, so each new layer stops short of the one below. Pyrite in this habit generally predates the fluorite, which is why the specks sit tight against the faces and, where growth continued, appear to hang just inside them. Fluorite at Mohs 4 marks easily; keep it clear of harder quartz neighbours on a crowded shelf.

Measuring 4.8 × 4.6 × 2.5 cm and weighing 70 g, the piece is putty-mounted on the small clear acrylic block seen here, and is the very specimen pictured.
