About this specimen
Olive-gold calcite buds crowd the ledges of this Fujian plate, dozens of them, each one a knot of small crystals grown together into a rounded head instead of a single sharp termination. They sit on a pale grey-cream matrix that is itself furred with a fine sugary druse and split by low blade-like ridges, so the yellow reads warm against a cool, chalky ground.
Calcite (CaCO3) will build almost any shape it likes, and here the growth ran slow and renucleated over and over, stacking small rhombs into knobbed aggregates rather than extending a few large crystals. The soft honey tone comes from trace iron in the carbonate and deepens where the buds gather thickest. Mohs 3 and three directions of perfect cleavage make this a case piece rather than a handling piece.
It measures 6.4 × 2.5 × 5.6 cm and weighs 140 g, shown here unmounted and without a stand. The plate in these photographs is the one that will be boxed for you.
