About this specimen
Almost all of this Erongo piece is dark: a tight thicket of near-black blades, splayed into rosettes and shot through with grey metallic glints. Out of the top of that thicket rises the reason for the specimen — a single pale prismatic aquamarine, glassy and ice-clear at the tip, standing free of the black blades around it.
Aquamarine is the blue variety of beryl, Be3Al2Si6O18, hexagonal and hard at 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale — hard enough that the small crystal has kept its edges and its termination while softer material around it broke away. Erongo pockets are collected for exactly this contrast: a sharp, light-coloured beryl set on a dark bladed groundmass, so the eye goes to the crystal without any help.
The specimen measures 4.6 × 3.8 × 3.3 cm and weighs 54 g, and it sits on the small acrylic block seen in the images, which show this specimen and no other.
