이 표본에 대하여
하나의 직립 덩어리 위에 성격이 전혀 다른 두 가지 구리 탄산염이 놓여 있습니다. 둥근 포도상 쿠션을 이룬 벨벳 같은 초록 공작석과, 오른쪽 면을 따라 쌓여 올라간 울트라마린 남동석 껍질입니다. 설탕처럼 조밀한 로제트는 뒤에서 빛을 받은 듯 보일 만큼 채도가 높습니다. 초록은 위쪽의 작은 첨탑으로 올라가고, 파랑은 그 뒤를 조수선처럼 따라가다가 아래쪽 턱을 따라 다시 고입니다. 그곳에는 조금 더 어두운 회갈색 모암이 몇 군데 드러나 있습니다.
남동석 Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2와 공작석 Cu2CO3(OH)2의 차이는 탄산염기 하나와 물 분자 하나 정도에 지나지 않으며, 습한 공기 속에서 남동석은 서서히 공작석으로 변해 갑니다. 이런 표본은 그 전환의 중간에 붙잡힌 것이고, 두 가지 색이 나타나는 이유도 여기에 있습니다. 둘 다 모스 경도 3.5에서 4 정도로 무르며 산과 물 세척을 싫어하므로, 마른 상태로 먼지만 털어 주십시오.
덩어리는 7.7 × 4.4 × 5.2 cm에 무게는 147 g이며, 평평한 아랫면 덕분에 받침대 없이 스스로 섭니다. 사진은 이 표본만을 촬영한 것입니다.
