About this specimen
Black is the whole point of this crystal: one stout prism, opaque through and through, its faces ruled with the deep vertical striations tourmaline is known for and glossy enough to throw hard white highlights along every ridge. A second, smaller prism leans against its shoulder, a fan of bladed crystals splays from the base, and a scatter of cream-white grains clings to the lower left flank.
Tourmaline is not one mineral but a family of boron silicates, and the iron-rich black member is the most common of them. Hardness 7 to 7.5 puts it beyond the reach of most household scratches, and the trigonal symmetry shows plainly in the flat-sided prism and its shallow, chisel-cut termination. The species is pyroelectric as well: warm a crystal and its two ends take opposite electrical charges.
It stands 6.1 cm tall, measures 5.1 × 3.6 cm across the base and weighs 96 g, presented upright on a clear acrylic block. Every photograph here is of this crystal.
