Bytownite

Crystal system · Triclinic

Bytownite is a silicate mineral recognized among collectors for its crystal form and distribution.

About Bytownite

Bytownite is a silicate mineral in the feldspar group (plagioclase series) and has the chemical formula (Ca,Na)(Al,Si)AlSi2O8 [An70-An90]. It crystallizes in the triclinic system and holds a steady position among silicate species.

Identification & care

Crystals commonly develop as massive, tabular; polysynthetic twinning. Its color range is broad, including gray, white, yellowish, and transparent gem material is golden yellow. The luster is vitreous to pearly, the streak is white, and specimens range from translucent to transparent. The cleavage is perfect {001} and {010}. The fracture is uneven, which aids identification.
