About Ouro Preto Region
The Ouro Preto region of Minas Gerais, Brazil, is one of the world’s most historically important gem and gold districts, named for the “black gold” (Au-Pd alloy) discovered in the 17th century. It is the source of legendary imperial topaz, sky-blue euclase and high-quality phenakite.
Geology
The region combines Proterozoic Au orogenic ores with Cretaceous pegmatites and alpine-cleft hydrothermal veins in metasediments. The complex geology supports an unusually diverse gem-mineral spectrum.
Notable Minerals
Imperial topaz (sherry-orange to pink, world-exclusive variety), euclase (sky-blue gem crystals), phenakite, gold, muscovite “stars”, beryl, tourmaline, hematite (specularite micro-spheres).
Collector Notes
Ouro Preto imperial topaz from Capão and Vermelhão mines is exclusive to the district — no other locality produces this color. Sky-blue euclase from Capão is one of the rarest gem materials in the world.
