About Tri-State Mining District (Joplin)
The Tri-State Mining District covering southwestern Missouri, southeastern Kansas, and northeastern Oklahoma centered on Joplin, MO is the type and most prolific Mississippi-Valley-Type (MVT) Pb-Zn deposit. Mining was active from the 1850s to the 1960s and produced classic galena, sphalerite, marcasite and dolomite specimens that define American Pb-Zn collector tradition.
Geology
The deposits are stratabound MVT Pb-Zn replacements in Mississippian limestones and dolostones, formed by low-temperature basinal brines. Open-space crystallization in karst breccias and bedding-plane voids produced exceptional cabinet-grade crystals.
Notable Minerals
Galena (large cubic crystals — Joplin “Tri-State galena cubes” defined the species standard for American collecting), sphalerite (gem-clear ruby-red and amber variety, “ruby jack”), marcasite (lustrous tabular cockscomb crystals — Joplin classic), pyrite (sometimes overgrowing marcasite), calcite (amber rhombohedra and dogtooth), dolomite (saddle-shaped pink), chalcopyrite, barite, quartz. Millerite occurs as fine yellow-bronze hair crystals in geodes.
Collector Notes
Tri-State specimens — particularly “ruby jack” sphalerite and Joplin galena cubes on dolomite — are American collecting royalty. Pair with Picher (Oklahoma) and Galena (Illinois) for the Midwest MVT collector tour.
