About this specimen
Hubei apophyllite with quartz at 6.9 cm; a small cabinet piece. The supplier did not record a weight.
Apophyllite grows as glassy pseudo-cubic and pyramidal crystals with a pearly basal cleavage; the Indian material is the world reference.
Good quartz is about hexagonal prisms with clean terminations and the glassy lustre that lets a cluster catch light from every angle.
Hubei's Daye copper-iron mines are famous for calcite, and the province also produces fluorite and quartz from its mountain districts.
