About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, aquamarine with mica at 4.8 cm and 35 g; a miniature with a sawn base. A plate of pale mica with two rounded pale blue aquamarine crystals set into it, the two minerals the supplier lists; the supplier notes the base is sawn flat.

Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl, forming hexagonal prisms with flat terminations; the Chinese material from Xuebaoding and Yunnan pairs it with muscovite and cassiterite.

Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals.

Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.

The piece is miniature in size, 4.8 × 4 × 1.9 cm (1.89 × 1.57 × 0.75 in) and 35 g (1.2 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
