About this specimen
Sichuan aquamarine with schorl at 13.6 cm and 582 g; a large cabinet plate. A broad grey plate with pale blue, glassy aquamarine crystals set at the top and black schorl tourmaline needles scattered across the surface, the beryl translucent.
Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl, forming hexagonal prisms with flat terminations; the Chinese material from Xuebaoding and Yunnan pairs it with muscovite and cassiterite.
Schorl is black iron tourmaline, the most common member of the group, forming lustrous striated prisms.
Sichuan hosts Xuebaoding, Jinkouhe and Leshan, sources of aquamarine, scheelite, prehnite, gypsum and the epidote-quartz skarn specimens seen here.
The piece is large cabinet in size, 13.6 × 10.5 × 5 cm (5.35 × 4.13 × 1.97 in) and 582 g (20.5 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
