About this specimen
Yunnan blue aragonite at 3 cm; a miniature, supplied on the acrylic stand shown. Aragonite in a soft sky blue covers the piece in a crust of fine needles, the surface reading almost furry where the needle tips stand up along the top edge.
Aragonite is the orthorhombic form of calcium carbonate; it favours needle-like and pseudo-hexagonal twinned crystals over calcite's rhombs.
Yunnan is China's most mineralogically diverse province, source of the pyromorphite, azurite and blue aragonite that have become collector favourites.
By size it is miniature, 3 × 1.8 × 0.7 cm (1.18 × 0.71 × 0.28 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
