About this specimen
Gunmetal and grease-bright, squared off like machine parts: the bournonite crystals on this small Chinese piece are blocky rather than tabular. The largest caps the specimen with a broad flat face whose edges break into fine parallel steps — the cogwheel notching the species is known for. Below and to the right, brighter crystals bristle from a white matrix flecked with brassy sulphide.
Bournonite is PbCuSbS3, a lead-copper-antimony sulphide, and its habit of twinning over and over on the same plane is what produces those cogwheel outlines; each notch along an edge is one twin lamella in the stack. At Mohs 2.5 to 3 the mineral is soft and bruises easily, and frequent handling leaves a dull film on the lustre, so hold this one by the matrix.
A thumb-sized piece, 4.3 × 3.0 × 3.0 cm and 85 g — noticeably dense for its size, as lead minerals are. It comes without a stand. This is the crystal group in the photographs, down to the last notched edge.
