About this specimen
Argentina rhodochrosite at 2.9 cm; a miniature. Rhodochrosite in a strong candy pink grown as rounded botryoidal lobes, the surface smooth and slightly waxy with a tan rim where the growth meets its rock.
The pink in rhodochrosite comes from manganese; crystals like these are far rarer than the banded stalactitic material used in jewellery.
Argentina's Capillitas district is the classic source of banded rhodochrosite, and the country also produces fine quartz and fluorite.
Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 2.9 × 2.6 × 1.3 cm (1.14 × 1.02 × 0.51 in). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
