About this specimen
Broad and blunt-topped, a milk-white calcite crystal takes up the whole upper half of this specimen — wider than it is tall, its faces glassy and finely striated, translucent enough that light entering one side glows out through the other. Below it the matrix is a thicket of white rosettes and small colourless druse crystals, with a few dark metallic patches breaking through near the base.
Daye in Hubei is copper-iron skarn country, and its cavities line themselves with calcite in this heavy, blocky habit rather than in slender points. Calcite (CaCO3) is only Mohs 3 and parts cleanly in three directions, so a knock that would leave a quartz crystal untouched can split it; it also fizzes in dilute acid, which is reason enough to keep every cleaning product well away.
The specimen measures 8.1 × 7.6 × 7.9 cm and weighs 410 g, and comes without a stand. Shown throughout in its own photographs, it arrives just as pictured.
