About this specimen
Two honey-gold heads rise from a short stem of dark grey-green rock, the larger flaring like a mushroom cap, the smaller cocked away from it at an angle. Both are sheathed in a sugar-fine crust of tiny calcite crystals that reads as matte from a distance and breaks into thousands of separate glints up close. Where the crust thins, the rock beneath shows through as small dark patches.
The Daye orefield in Huangshi is a skarn system, iron and copper ores formed where hot fluid met limestone, and its carbonates crystallise late, dusting earlier, darker rock with exactly this kind of granular coating. Yellow here usually traces back to iron picked up from the surrounding ore. Calcite is Mohs 3 with perfect rhombohedral cleavage, and a micro-crystal crust dulls quickly if rubbed, so a soft dry brush is the only cleaning it should ever get.
Compact at 4.3 × 2.0 × 3.0 cm and 14 g, mounted on putty on the clear acrylic cube seen in the photographs. This is the piece that ships — no substitutions from the same lot.
