About this specimen
This Fujian plate reads as two terrains stacked on one rock. The upper half is a dense pavement of small water-clear cubes, faintly blue where they mass together, laid over dark grey host rock. Below the break a tan, sugar-textured druse spreads out, and there the same fluorite appears only as isolated cubes, widely spaced and standing alone.
Colourless fluorite gets passed over in favour of purple and green, which is a shame on a piece like this: with no colour to look at, what you read instead is geometry — cube edges, the way the small crystals line up along the fracture, the difference in crystal density between the two surfaces. Fluorite is CaF2, hardness 4, cleaving cleanly along octahedral planes, so the exposed cube corners along the top edge are the vulnerable points.
The plate is 7.5 × 7.0 × 4.0 cm and weighs 185 g, shown unmounted in the hand. What the camera shows here is what leaves our bench.
