About this specimen

The largest cube on this plate holds a smoky violet shadow deep in its centre, floating behind faces of pale mint-green fluorite that read almost like sea glass. Around it a low mosaic of smaller cubes steps across the plate in every direction, and the right-hand third gives way to a thicket of colourless quartz points flecked with rust-brown iron staining.

Xianghualing in Hunan is the source of these cool, quiet greens, a softer palette than the saturated purples the province is better known for, and one that lets internal colour zoning show through. Fluorite (CaF2) is only Mohs 4 and parts on four perfect octahedral cleavage planes, so lift the piece by its quartz-rich end and keep it clear of knocks and sudden temperature swings.

The plate measures 11.7 × 6.9 × 4.6 cm and weighs 260 g, large enough to sit unaided on a shelf; it is shown here in the hand, with no base. Every photograph on this page was taken of the piece you will receive.
