About this specimen

Turn this crystal to the light and its interior becomes a flight of violet steps. Deep purple growth zones stack inward from the corners in ruled, terrace-like lines, each tracing where a cube face once stood, and they float in a body transparent enough to see straight through to the far side. A pale olive-cream carbonate crust grips the left flank and reappears along the right edge.

This is a phantom seen in cross-section rather than in silhouette: zone upon zone of purple fluorite sealed under later colourless growth. Because the piece is essentially one large individual rather than a cluster, the entire growth history sits legibly inside a single crystal. Fluorite’s perfect octahedral cleavage means a sharp knock will pop a triangular flake from a corner, so support it from below and never grip it by the edges.

Compact at 4.6 × 4.1 × 3.6 cm and 75 g. Pictures were taken of this crystal only; it arrives on the clear acrylic block seen beneath it.
