About this specimen

Two rosettes grew into one on this Mexican desert rose: a smaller head resting on a broader body, each built from overlapping blades that curl outward like the petals of a bloom left to dry. The colour is sand through and through — matte beige, with grit visible in every plate.

Roses like this form underground rather than on the surface. Gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) crystallises out of evaporating pore water in arid ground and simply grows around whatever sand lies in its path, which is why the blades are gritty and opaque instead of clear. Gypsum is Mohs 2 — a fingernail will mark it — and the sand content makes the blade edges friable, so lift the piece by its base and keep it dry; standing water dissolves gypsum slowly but surely.

3.8 × 2.5 × 2.0 cm and just 20 g, putty-set on a clear acrylic block. Each frame shows this rosette pair itself, mounted as pictured.

Can I return it?

Yes — there is a 14-day return window.
